Fall Break @ 2:56 PM
This week is my first paid Fall Break as a teacher. As marvelous as I thought it would be, living in Arizona and not dealing with the winter blast that seems to have hit all of our former homes, it's been more of a lazy, sleep in, eat, exercise, and read, kind of break from reality. Not that this is bad, it's just slightly different than what I had envisioned for myself. I dreamt up days of reading in the sun, swimming in the pool, exercising in the gym, shopping for new pieces of furniture to make our home more comfy...then I realized we live in the ghetto.
I don't say that in jest. We legitimately live in the ghetto. Yesterday, when I took Garrison to the light rail in the morning, there was a cop car, an ambulance, a fire truck, and a dead man, a block away from our home. I really thought nothing of it, because the man was dead, it's not like we'd have any problems with him. BUT how did he die? Only a month ago we witnessed two men breaking into our neighbors car (we actually watched this happen!!!). Our neighbors sit outside of their front doors to talk on the phone, they hold parties outside at 10:30 pm on a Tuesday night, and they "bump" some wicked beats when they start up their squealing cars. I say none of this to place a stereotype on a certain population, but the activities I had planned out for myself (in my mind) don't really fit into the landscape that we currently live in.
That being said, I've spent a lot of time getting acquainted with our direct TV subscription, something I'm not terribly proud of. I've started to cook more. I've read some of J.K. Rowling's new book, which I must say that I absolutely LOVE. (Have I mentioned that I'm really just happy about life and that I'm living but that I love to read "real" stories that are dark and more applicable to everyday life? Because I do). Growing up with Rowling's writing style was probably the best thing that could've ever happened to me, as a child and as an avid lover of reading. Other than that, I've created a list of things I'd like to do but haven't quite found the motivation to do them. Anyone want to clean out our guest bedroom to transform it into a study with me? Yeah, me either.
It's only day two of fall break, so hopefully I'll have a few more adventures that are worthy of sharing.
